The Haacke–Hickey Name Change
How the Haackes Became the Hickeys
Edward Haacke was born 08 Sep 1816 in Markham, Ontario and arrived in Fulton County, Illinois around 1836. He married Harriet Porter in Canton in 1843, moved to Jo Daviess County, Illinois, then Iowa in 1869, and finally returned to Canton where he died 19 Apr 1894. He was a brother of Captain David Haacke. Although Edward never officially changed his name, it appeared variously in records as Haake, Hacke, Haakey, and Hickey — he could not write and may have let the name slip phonetically. After his death, his children were listed in probate as Hickey. His grandson David Hickey wrote that Edward "came to the United States from Canada practically on the run" and "changed his name completely." Edward had a hook replacing his right hand, lost in a sawmill accident, which became legendary in family stories. He also refused to let his children attend school. The name-change mystery was finally solved when the researcher found the probate listing all children as Hickey, and confirmed it when a great-granddaughter at the Hickey/Savidge reunion in Atlantic, Iowa produced Edward's obituary card bearing the spelling "Haake."
